Fahrrad.de delivers cargo bikes direct to customers’ doorsteps

Expansion of the company's product range

Stuttgart, 7th June 2021 – fahrrad.de has added a new product category to its online shop. Since May, the bike retailer has been delivering ready-to-ride cargo bikes to customers all over Germany. Furthermore, in the summer, the existing range will be supplemented by a cargo bike available exclusively on fahrrad.de.

Since May, cargo bikes have been available online at fahrrad.de and the company’s five physical locations. Cargo bikes already account for 4% of the German market share for e-bikes. The introduction of this new category is intended to meet this growing demand and open up new target groups.

We're confident we'll sell at least 10,000 cargo bikes via fahrrad.de by 2025. — Michael Benner, Director Purchasing & Products at Internetstores

More space and new processes

Storage, assembly and delivery are particularly challenging when it comes to selling and shipping cargo bikes: “We’ve rented another warehouse with around 2,000 square metres of space in our logistics centre in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim and converted it accordingly,” explains Eduard Jesser, Head of Returns. Weighing around 50 kg, each cargo bike is delivered fully assembled on a pallet. “In addition to space, this also requires implementing new processes and working with specialist service providers,” Jesser continues. This is one reason why only a few online retailers have offered cargo bikes up to now. However, Benner adds: “The effort was worth it. We can now deliver cargo bikes to our customers’ doorsteps without long delivery times and hopefully contribute to getting more people to switch from cars to bicycles.”

A choice of three types of cargo bike

There are currently three types of cargo bikes to choose between: the relatively small yet powerful compact cargo bike, the three-wheeled cargo bike and the classic 2-wheeled cargo bike with front transport box, which is one of the most sought-after and popular models. What’s more, fahrrad.de is continuously expanding its cargo bike range to include more products and brands.

“We’re expecting further deliveries of cargo bikes throughout the season and are confident that we’ll be able to offer them at fair prices all year round, even if demand is high. In addition, we’re currently producing our first in-house cargo bike, which will go on sale this summer,” explains Benner. This Ortler cargo bike will soon be available, exclusively on fahrrad.de. The delivery time is no longer than with other bikes in the shop: currently three to six working days. The range is rounded off by an ever-growing selection of cargo bike accessories.

Cargo bikes: from strength to strength

Cargo bikes have been steadily gaining popularity over the last few years. This is especially true in cities, where many people are replacing their car with one. They’re also particularly popular with families needing to ferry their kids around and carry groceries. Additionally, many delivery services are also turning to this environmentally-friendly and space-saving alternative to the car.

fahrrad.de already gets more people on bikes than any other specialist retailer. Tapping into the cargo bike market – and with it, a new target group – should further contribute to the growth of this multichannel provider.
